While people may debate the merits of animal rescue groups and animal transporters moving rescues from one geographic region of the country to another, the fact remains that it saves lives, at least the lives of those animals that get relocated. During the early morning hours of Friday, January 29,2010, a call went out throughout the Northeast that an animal transport truck from the Bowling Green Kentucky/Warren County Hildred Animal Shelter was disabled along the mountainous roads of West Virginia with a snapped driveshaft. While efforts were underway to tow the vehicle to a safe location, phones were ringing and animal rescue groups and rescue transporters leapt into action to get there and help the animals continue on their rescue journeys! Dr Clair of East Stroudsburg Veterinary Hospital received a call at 5am from Barry Heim of Pike County Humane Society cancelling their regular spay/neuter surgery appointment for that day. With surgery cancelled and animals in need, Dr Clair offered the use of the hospitals own transport van with the appropriate license tag, DOGNCAT. The vehicle in West Virginia had well over 100 animals on board, dogs of all ages and sizes, cats and kittens, as well as some parakeets for extra measure! With a vehicle, but no kennels and crates at his disposal, Dr Clair made a quick call to his friends at AWSOM, the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe and an hour later, with a full tank of gas and van loaded floor to ceiling with cages and crates generously loaned by AWSOM, headed southwest. With Pike County Humane Society having an hour head start, Dr Clair managed to catch them 5 1/2 hours later just as they arrived in Clarksburg, West Virginia. The entire transport load of rescue animals were quickly divided among 4 vans in the freezing cold and the vans started their own rescue leg northbound to meet other rescues, fosters, adoptive homes and more transports to continue moving the rescued animals along this modern day equivalent of an Underground Railroad of sorts moving rescue animals from the South to the North to stop the killing that would otherwise be likely! Like it or not, transport of rescue animals geographically matters to each and every animal moved. Try looking into their eyes and telling them we don't support animal transport on a large scale!?
