A brand new adventure awaited me on the morning of May 4, 2008: my brother and sister-in-law treated me to a special experience: a sightseeing tour in a small plane over the East Styrian mountains. The plane was actually a cross between a small motorized plane and a glider, and sure enough at some point during the flight the captain turned off the engine and we coasted silently over the rolling hills of East Styria. The early part of the flight took us into the northern part of Styria, with a view towards the high Eastern Austrian Alps, including the Eisenerz Alps, the Hochschwab Massif, the Veitsch mountains and the Semmering mountain pass. Styria is not one of the most well-known provinces in Austria, but it is immensely scenic and not as crowded with tourists as some other places in Austria. It offers a huge variety of outdoor recreational activities, both for summer and winter, and features picturesque countless historic towns and villages, sprinkled in with many castles, fortresses and monasteries. Graz, the capital of Styria, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 2002 European Cultural Capital.
