A collection of videos & slides I collected on our spring break trip to Centralia, Pennsylvania on Friday, April 10, 2009. We also got to visit the abandoned mine shaft at the Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland. There, I spoke to a lady with ties to Centralia and learned a lot from her, and also picked up a copy of the book "The Day the Earth Caved In" by Joan Quigley, which is chock-full of information. I found that some of the information I put on the video was wrong after reading parts of the book. For example, the Orthodox Church, St. Mary's, that is featured in the video was not the Russian Orthodox Church, it is the Greek Orthodox Church. Sts. Peter-Paul was the Russian Orthodox Church in town and was one of the first structures to be razed due to its location in town. It laid right on the spot of the trench that was started in 1969, abandoned, and redug in the late '70s to keep the mine fire from spreading over to the west end of town. My parents, Karen & Gary, are featured in the video. Music in the video is from the "Silent Hill" soundtrack.

If you enjoyed this video, you will want to order a copy of the movie "The Town That Was." I have been waiting for an opportunity to screen this movie, and I am happy to announce that the movie will be released on DVD on May 19, 2009, and that you can now pre-order your own copy at Amazon.com.

  • @Windsweptzariel According to the book by Joan Quigley, the child's burial vault buried at the corner of Park & Locust contains a Bible, lumps of coal, a miner's carbide lamp, a copy of the town's centennial souvenir book, & a chronological recitation of the town's history.

  • @toshicoski I care for my daughter very much, as well as my parents and my daughter's best friend who accompanied us. Our time on Wood Street and the abandoned stretch of Hwy 61 amounted to less than an hour, and the danger to my daughter was way less than all the x-rays and brain scans she received in the past 14 years at UVa as a result of her congenital diaphragmatic hernia. How many chemicals have you eaten in the meat that came from the friendly neighborhood factory farm? Have a nice day.

  • What did she say from 3:39 - Oh my god, the pitch is here is like really really extreme? The hit is? The heat is?

  • @SalemSaberhagen1 No, what I was meaning there was that right there where I was walking, the side of the road had fallen in and pulled away from the median so much that it was really steep and hard to walk on.

  • Cool video. If I ever venture up to PA to see the abandoned turnpike I'm thinking of giving this a visit as well. It will be one long drive.

Since we got to see so much of you dashboard (LOL!) I couldn't help but notice something. Did the vehicle you were in come from VA? It looked like there was a remnant of a Va state inspection sticker still stuck to the windshield.

  • @whatihave2do Sharp eye! Yes, in fact, I purchased that Explorer at the former Winchester Ford in Winchester, VA!

  • what is the name of the song starting at around 3 minutes?

  • How did tha t happen O.o?

  • I love the purple Converse.

  • I drove here a few years ago and chatted with with one of the few remaining residents. It seems somewhere around 2005 the state got paranoid that someone was going to get hurt wandering around up there, and filled on anything of interest with about 12 feet of dirt. Sadly, there is not much left to see aside from a slightly smokey crack in the original highway and some small bits of smoke coming up through the edge of the dirt fill.

  • Good Video.... check out my page for the video I made.

  • @MAMsMom97 I agree
