For people saying that guns cause more damage than knives you might want to do a bit more research. Knives are VERY damaging but they also have very limited range. Your chances of survival from a single stab wound are lower than your chances of survival from a single gun shot. A stab followed by a large slice can decimate huge portions of a person's insides.
In short, up close I'd much rather face a gun than a knife. At a distance I'd rather face a knife since I have a better chance to run.

I think this comes down to a couple things(but I agree that the law is stupid). Knives look more "menacing" to people for some reason. Also, killing someone with a knife is much more personal than killing someone with a gun. Second, there is a rich history of guns in America and the gun proponents are much more vocal than knife proponents.

cons: noisy, depends on ammo.
*knife
pros:silent, doesn't depend on ammo.
cons:less damage (than a gun, duh), range, slow.
both tools are equally efficient on their own area.
