In the summer of 2007, the New York Civil Liberties Union partnered with youth from three community organizations -- Future of Tomorrow, Make the Road New York and Youth on the Move -- to produce three short documentaries on student experience with the over-policing of New York City schools and the School to Prison Pipeline. The NYCLU supported the youth in creating their own videos using their own words and footage.

This film was produced by youth from Make the Road New York.

  • Those of you who find this a joke must be privileged middle class who don't know any better. Go to the website and educate yourself and you will find this is a serious issue. I commend the young people who took the initiative to do this work. It saddens me greatly to see the schools like prisons, not to mention so many other places. Don't just sit back and take it!

  • Many schools across the country have rules very similar to new york city public schools. But in other schools the rules are enforced by the school you break the rules you get a detention, or inschool suspension, or out of school suspension.

By having security officers in charge of discipline braking a cell phone policy rule, you can be handcuffed taken down town, fingerprinted, beaten. ect. Kids should not be arrested for rules, rules are not LAWS. theres a difference.

  • Suspended for a day, because you simply would not cooperate with a lawful order. Your rebellious nature caused you wasted time and a chance to develop a productive working relationship and repore with the men and women who have sworn to provide a conducive learning environment where you and faculty can be free of hostilities and disruptions. You don't see a problem with your outright refusal to cooperate? No. You deliberately provoked an unnecessary confrontation, now blame School Safety Agents.

  • Kids MUST follow the rules. Without rules there can be no order. Things are bad but, it's worse when we cater to the kids and have them believe the world revolves around them. If they tell you no cell phones in school, then DON'T bring cell phones. If you do bring one and then you get caught with it, comply. If you don't want to comply, then keep it moving...home, prison, whereever. Make room in the school for kids who actually want to learn.

  • he chould have just got his phone out of his bag and had it over with...

  • Great video. This is the truth!

  • lol, a youth who has been suspended is more likely to be held back, drop out, or commit a crime. Of course, they most likely young criminals or dumb asses who ruin the education process for everybody in the school who are there for the purpose of learning.
