Firmware 2.0.4 Malfunction - VIDEO # 2:

Firmware 2.0.4 for Canon 5D Mark II is really a GREAT update, but we found a malfunction related to iris/aperture that occurs with some lenses.

We CONFIRMED this issue with the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro USM lens.

It was tested and confirmed by several users, with several copies and several camera bodies, it is not an isolated lens or camera problem.

DESCRIPTION:

This video shows how the IRIS/diaphragm of this lens "jitters" (it can also be HEARD) when the user manually rotates the focus ring and the camera is in FULL MANUAL mode for movie (M + Live View mode set to "Still+Movie - Movie Display").

This IRIS jitter affects the image being recorded on video.

This strange behavior prevents the use of this great lens for serious movie/video purposes, making the footage unusable.

NOTES:

1- The settings described above are the correct ones to have "full manual control" on movie/video mode.
So the IRIS jitter (nor any kind of iris change) should NOT happen in this situation, and in fact it does NOT happen in Firmware version 1.1.0.

2- Please note that the aperture value on the camera's LCD monitor is always kept at the same value (3.2), and the user does NOT change it. In this video we ONLY changed focus.

3- You can also watch the Video # 1 which shows what can be seen on the camera's LCD monitor during this process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPTDqIGED0k

VERY IMPORTANT:

- We use Canon gear and we love this camera. That's why we try to do our best in the most constructive possible way to encourage Canon to give the best features and results to their customers. We want the best from this extraordinary camera, and the best for Canon as company, for making it possible.

- Other lenses may suffer this issue too: we have received some reports about 3rd party lenses having similar problems ("weird noises" coming from the iris) and/or iris/diaphragm inconsistencies experienced with firmware 2.0.4.

    Hi, please check our:

    Canon 5D Mark II - Firmware 2.0.4 Bug / Malfunction - IRIS issue - VIDEO 1

Despite it's not recording video,it's in the proper LV mode (same is if we were recording) and shows what it's usually seen when changing focus and the IRIS jitter occurs.

You can also check our Blog post: "Malfunction in Firmware 2.0.4 UPDATE" with additional videos (one made with a Sigma 150mm Macro).

Check our Blog post "List of Lenses Affected - UPDATE 3" too.

    Thanks for the info.

I have read the thread and understand what you guys are experiencing. My problem however, is a 3 frame freeze, at random, when panning. Focus is not being changed when it occurs for me. Perhaps mine is a completely different issue than this, sorry for the confusion

Hi, Canon still didn't fix it.

FW 2.0.4 gives you STANDARD 30p (29.97fps), 24p (23.98fps) & 25p, and Manual Audio gain. So if you need any of those features, yes, it's really worth the upgrade

BUT if you need to use any lens affected by IRIS jitter for video purpose, then you might want to wait,or try 2.0.4 and get back to 1.1.0 if you don't like it AND IF you still have the 1.1.0 .FIR file

Check our Blog and the LIST of LENSES AFFECTED: bit . ly / aDXtn6

    Best regards

  • Have they fixed it yet. I haven't up graded to the .4 yet. Should I?

  • Sorry for the deleted comments below, had an issue with YouTube and the internet browser...
