To get their food they go to the bottom of the sea using homemade spearguns, swimming feet and goggles. They can dive more than 100 feet and break their eardrums deliberately in young age.
Historically they have been sea nomads, well-known for their sea-faring, fishing and diving skills. Today a vast majority are living on stilt houses in the coastlines of Mindanao, Borneo and Sulawesi. They are also known under names as Badjao, Bajau Laut, Sama-Bajaw, Sama Dilaut and Sea Gypsies.
