This yirdaki was acquired from Djakapurra just before his recent trip to New Zealand with Aaron Nalkuma. For those who have been watching the ididjaustralia channel on YouTube, both Djakapurra and Nalkuma (and M*lk*y) were in Korea in 2006 for an international 'folklore' festival of traditional dance and music. Djakapurra, with M*lk*y, have plans to establish a traditional dance group to be called "Gany'tjurr" or White Heron in English.

This yirdaki is just awesome. It is light, powerful and loud. Back pressure is spot on. The instrument is highly responsive, which means the slightest breath produces a big sound. The bore is incredible and needs to be seen to be believed... convolutions, internal pockets, cavenous topography - this is an exceptional piece of wood, natural throughout.

This is probably the best instrument produced by Djakapurra in the last 5 years.

Djakapurra was for many years a cultural consultant to Australia's premier Indigenous dance company, Bangarra Dance Company. One of his greatest accomplishments was as Master of Ceremonies (MC) of the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

This clip shows Djakapurra first, and then Larry Winiwini - Djakapurra's brother-in-law. Winiwini just goes crazy with this stick, playing rhythmic patternings that meld into a blur. Listen to this clip again and again to understand what is going on...

  • To make a stereotype out of a stereotype is every bit as bad as the original offense. Respond to hatred with love, to evil with good, to ignorance with education. It may sound cliche, but it's so true, and so relevant.

And for the record, I enjoyed the vid as well. I love the sound of the didgeridoo.

  • The yirdaki works like a drum. It is a rhythmic instrument. But if you were a real music lover you would have understood that straight away.

  • Amazing player...diana

  • Brilliant stuff !!!

  • its called circular breathing. while pushing the air out of your mouth u breath in ur nose not skipping a sound

    its simple to do

  • lol, fair enough.

for me personally it's when somebody runs his hand up the fabric. if playin didge was like that for me i also wouldn't play it.

well, at least you can enjoy listening.

    ;-)

  • Truth be told, the reason I wouldn't be able to play the didgeridoo is because it seems to be one of those instruments you have to buzz your lips to use. And I cannot stand doing that. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. I'd rather listen and enjoy the music of those who don't mind buzzing their lips.

  • hes you would. every average pearson would, with practoce. you may not be able to play as well as this guy, but with a little determination and persistence it's not that hard to learn.

  • circular breathing is not hard. just a bit confusing at first. it takes very little air to play a didge.
