This is a video of us attempting to make an electric motor work in Physics, it doesnt work at first, but we get it going.

  • I have to make one of these for my grade 11 physics class and I was wondering if the permanent magnets are both the same or opposite (ie. north north or south north)?

  • There are no magnets in this model. The wire wrap on the bottom turns into an electromagnet when current is added and a little push start is provided for the spinning coil.

  • OMG i have the same exact project but I can't get my motor to work just like yours!

I've been going through the internet looking for why it won't work! This could be the answer to my prayers!

could you explain why it wasnt working before and what you did to get it to work? Also what type of battery did you use because I am using a single AA but i'm thinking perhaps that why my motor isnt working.

    THANKS!!

  • Yea, we were using a giant 9 Volt battery for this project. As for why it wouldn't work, these were really tricky to set up and about four of the twenty of us actually got it to work. So just make sure all your connections are good and OH YEA the wire is anodized, you need to scrape off the coating (clear on this wire) where the contacts are so electrons can actually pass through, otherwise nothing will happen no matter what you do.

  • thats a way nicer class demo than we ever did. we just had the beakmans motor kit thing with a wire and a ceramic magnet.

  • Amazing, everyone look! Someone said that our school district is superior in ONE aspect, write this day down in the record books! (I don't want the hate mail, keep it to yourself, this is just another example of POSITIVE info on the school, which STILL has yet to be named here on youtube, so screw you)

  • I cannot believe this is a physics class! I built a much more reliable electric motor in Cub Scouts. By the way, the wire mentioned is not anodized, but rather varnished copper.

  • I built a motor using a 9V battery and the coil made from the solenoid of a broken doorbell. The motor wont spin, it just leans toward the magnet, no matter if I use north or south poles. The coil has 2.2 ohms of resistance, and the rest of the wires give it a total resistance of 2.5 ohms. What am I doing wrong?

  • @monsoondude they have north and south poles

  • ''Record! What in the world...''

  • Would a 1.5V AA battery work on this project?

  • No you can't. If you're talking about using the chemical energy of glucose and transferring it to electrical energy then you just said you can power a TV with a battery. Congratulations. Electric motors operate above 90% efficiency. Batteries would be nice to get even a third of that.

  • That's 3300 Watts and would probably trip their breaker. I'm sure you had to plug it into a special outlet at your house (assuming it really was 15 amps at 220 volts). I'll back the school saying it's better not to plug in a 4.5 horsepower motor. Not to mention the risk of death from electrocution or the fact that one that powerful could break an arm easily.

  • i builded one motor in second grade it operated at 220v 15amps. the stupid teather said " the scholl wont take any risks " but the others got " safe motors " and the motor worked a million times at home. stupid teather.

  • Yeah! We build one, too.

We operated it with 12V and it just got too hot, the wires began to burn, the contacts melted.

  • I never had a physic class..but my first motor ever made is just COOL and perfect..first run..no problem ;-)
