I think I've finally built the better burner, at least for my own purposes.

I call it a fusion burner because it incorporates ideas and design elements from several others that I've seen over the months.

The idea is thus: you've got a traditional tube style vapour burner with a smallish fuel tank. There is a line that runs to a remote tank. The fuel inlet on the burner is lower than the tubes, thus preventing fuel from flooding the tubes and spilling over. Likewise the fuel level in the remote tank is kept below the level of the inlet on the burner.

Every now and then during the run I simply lift up the remote tank for a few seconds and let fuel flow into the burner. Then I replace the tank on the table and any excess fuel in the burner flows back to the remote tank. The burner will *never* flood and spill flaming meths.

Finally: here's a trick for lighting these burners. They are difficult to start because they must be preheated. Take a small scrap of paper towel, wad it up and stick it between the tubes next to a pair of burner slits. Soak it with some meths, light it, and stick the burner in your firebox. The burner will light by itself within a minute and you've not had to arse about with a torch. :)

  • that is a very good idea!

  • After trying out a few different ideas, I think this one is the best working one so far (at least for my needs). The remote fueling tank is what really makes it nice. Worry free handling of the alcohol is just as nice as a design that won't over flow (because it cannot be overfilled).

  • thats a very nice looking burner, like the conept. your happy that it doesnt over flow huh? :D

  • While it provides for some exciting moments, watching a burner belch a pool of flaming alcohol into the firebox is not something that I want to see again...and again.. ;)

  • What tubing are you using between the remote and the burner? And where can I buy some?

  • great job

  • I agree, light it up

  • your a genius.if you designed it from scracth..out standing.thanks for the knowledge..
