I don't understand the value of gold; it has very little utility, and although relatively rare, there many other substances equally rare that don't command the same price. I mean, fiat money only has value because we give it value, but really so does gold, no? So, if they are really equal, then why not invest in stocks (cash) for the higher return. I guess it's all just psychology.

@SuperOxideDimutase Society needs money to function, so it must find something to use that has properties such as: rare, durable, hard to extract out of nature, easily divisible, easily identifiable, easily portable. If something else had those properties besides gold, it would also be money. The only things that come close are other precious metals, such as silver.
