In this video, I use a Kingston Technology HyperX DDR3 memory kit and the new Phobya U-Cool hybrid water-/air-coolers to demonstrate how to remove a RAM heatsink.

Some memory heatspreaders can be very easy to remove (particularly double-sided RAM with screwed-on heatsinks). Other cases are more difficult and I demonstrate the installation with one of the more difficult cases. The HyperX modules I use are single-sided and the heatsink is attatched with a very strong adhesive.
In the video, you will see how you can safely remove the heatsink, even if it's one of the more difficult ones.
Of course, as always, such a mod is risky and you lose your warranty when removing the original air-coolers. So, proceed at your own risk.

  • i've got a coolermaster v10 witch doesn't allows me to put kinds of ram like these that you're showing in the video. My question is if i buy this kind of RAM and after remove the heatspreader will it be ok after with just the cooling of my V10? thanks

  • @stefbcrich Yes, that should work without any problems. Heatspreaders on RAM are more of an aesthetic thing than anything else. The memory chips can take quite a lot of heat and still function properly, so don't worry about it unless you have extremely high-end, overclocked and over-volted RAM.

  • were can i buy those water cooling modules

  • @Leanthesoccerplayer I think Aquatuning are the exclusive distributor. They are based in Germany, but they have online stores in different countries.

  • The watercooling heatsink has 2 parts. The larger part that is attached to the barbs and the smaller part that screws onto the larger heatsink.

At 4:30, it would be better to flip the ram so the modules come into contact with the larger part of the heatsink instead of the smaller component. Yes, both ways will cool the ram, but if its one-sided ram you might as well use the better side of the heatsink.

  • Nice !!!

  • looks scary... I'd rather get a air cooler...

  • Thx.

  • When removing heatsinks from anything, especially RAM then use a hairdryer or smth to heat the board to hot! The glue will not stick so good then and it will come loose more easy without having the kinder suprise effect when removing it without doing it so.

  • I voided my memory :) now I just need a ram water block.

  • no it dus not under a law passed way back in the 90s thay cant voide your warrinty if you remove it as its considered a seperate part. its part of the act thay alows users to open thare computers to upgrade without voideing thare warrrinty. meeening thay have to prove that removeing it is what bade it break.

  • when you use to much force, you can pull a chip off

  • hi man, i wounder if i can remove my heatspreaders on my 6 ocz reaper 2000mhz ddr3 memories, i have bouth these phobya water cooled memorycoolers, how big difference does these make without water against original ??? i also have the Arctic Cooling Arctic RC, with the Arctic Cooling RC Turbo Module, i know i guy hwo swithed these arctic cooling on his dominator GT and these were 2X better that the original heatsinks,

  • Wow man, what a pain that looks like. I'd rather just buy ram that doesn't come with a heatsink attached.
