Sprawl in Charlotte currently accounts for 92% of the land in the city. This stunning fact is motivating action by residents, leaders, and activists. To combat the growing sprawl in the region the Civic By Design Forum, along with DPZ Charlotte, has designed solutions to repair the sprawl. This video gives a brief overview of the designs and includes:
1. Traffic calm, pedestrian friendly streets that incorporate all modes of transportation
2. A transformation of Eastland Mall as a green, walkable, civic, transit oriented Eastland town center modeled on our previous Civic By Design work and the successful Pearl District in Portland
3. Redesigns of the sprawling intersections including: Eastway/Central Avenue and the 5 Points intersection at Johnson C. Smith University.
5. A cool redesign of The Square -the intersection of Trade Street and Tryon Street as a real square.
6. Detail designs for embedding each streetcar stop in the urban streetscape.
7. A custom designed modern streetcar that allows riders to experience the Charlotte Skyline.
