Duke was until recently the biggest big tusker in the Kruger National Park. Duke was caught on 16 April and fitted with a radio transmitter. The radio transmitter enabled them to go and check up with a almost 100% effective tracking device (the same as used to track vehicles). Satellite technology gives a reading similar to Google Earth.
This data is then used for further research without disturbing the animal.

  • What a magnificent beast. I had the privelage of seeing Duke, with and without his tusks. It was unfortunately pronounced by SAN/Parks on 7 October 2011 that

    Duke had died of natural causes at the age of 55+. RIP Duke. He really was a

    magic bull elephant. In his prime probably the hugest tusker alive on the entire

    planet.
