Its really simple why they would do that, actually. In the wild, foxes have an excellent sense of the ground beneath them. When they feel that the ground beneath them is hollow, they pounce and try to cave in a tunnel, hoping to catch a small rodent or other burrowing animal. Tasty treats to a fox!
