late 1966...brian should have flown to london...booked abbey road...and contract george martin to co-write the orchestrations with him...martin brings in top session players...then brian offers ultimatum to mike...fly your ass over her along with carl, dennis, al to do vocal overdubs...

if not..1967 gets a solo brian wilson masterpiece and i'm leaving the fucking band unless you tow the line mike love...

    nice scenario...didnt happen

  • If only Brian had fired Mike in '67 instead of letting him intimidate Van Dyke into leaving the project.

  • @BluesPianoMan12 Considering Good Vibrations preceded Smile's proposed release date by around six months, yes, it comes.

  • But if Mike is gone, does Good Vibrations come or not???? Give Mike some credit, he rewrote all of Good Vibrations that came the Greatest Pop song ever.....so does Brian really fire Mike at this point.....Hum......Brian reached the top and forgot to "plant the effing flag" and the Beatles snatched it from him.....ie; It's all Brian's fault - sorry to say..........

  • @11maebelle this is the same recording is'nt it? i thought it was the same recording but just faded out.

  • I can't even describe the emotions I'm left with when I hear this song. Brian's solo piano version outtake on The SMiLE Sessions leaves me in complete disarray and tears every time. The note that he sings at the end that he repeats numerous times is what I want to hear for eternity when my soul departs this earth. And on the album outtake he he just abruptly stops and says "Let's hear that.". Yes, Brian, let's hear that. Again, and again, and again.

  • @veramariegalvez I've been saying this for years, and will say it for years to come.

  • Brian Wilson is a genius.

    Not just a musical genius.

    A genius, period.

  • @dingothing For me, the best part of Beethoven is NOT the melody but what he makes it into. The opening of Symphony Nr.5 - not much of a tune but in 7 minutes he's created something thrilling, something only he could've created. Some of the late quartets are more about sound and power, sadness and emotion, than about melody. Beethoven worked hard for his melodies. The beauty of something like the MIssa Solemnis is something only Beethoven could do. I like Beethoven - he struggled!

  • @TheStockwell no, no. Beethoven did not write "decent melodies", the melodies are the only reason I love his music and im a melody freak. The genius of his melodylines comes from the blood sweat and tears put into it. Makes the melodies far more interesting. The reason for the struggle was that his standards were so insanely high. YES he could have pooped elton level predictable tunes out in his sleep. His ambition was insane, especially in the melodic area, hence the struggle.

  • @dingothing You must be thinking of Mozart or Haydn, maybe Schubert. Beethoven envied their ability to just come up with tunes. Beethoven could NEVER have written Elton Johns melodies in his sleep. In his letters - and his manuscripts - Beethoven struggles to write melodies. Sure, the final product was great, but he sweated over it. Beethoven DID come up with decent tunes but he DID struggle to find them. He was a theme-and-variation genius, but the "melody thing" wasn't effortless.
