Tourism taking its toll on Tibet - 07 Aug 07

Tibet is experiencing a surge in tourism.
More than a million people visited the Himalayan region in the first 6 months of this year - double last year's number.
And although it's benefitting the economy it's also taking a toll on some of Tibet's treasures. Tony Cheng reports.

Extraction of borax, chromium, copper, gold, and uranium is being vigorously carried out by the Chinese government as a means of providing raw materials for industrial growth.

Seven of China's 15 key minerals are expected to run out within a decade and consequently the extraction of minerals in Tibet is increasing in rapid and unregulated manner. The new railway line to Lhasa is expected to provide easier means of exploitation of Tibet's enormous natural resources.
