We had a great time there too...and it's not as worse as you say Stuart...we certified there too and the course and instructors where really great!

Koh Tao might be the cheapest place to get certified, but its definitely one of the worse. 3 1/2 day crash courses that churn out dangerously inept divers. I've seen so many horrible student get certified in over 2 years, it's scary.
I do love the island though, it still feels like my home. But if you really want to learn how to dive, go somewhere else.
