new art saxophone quartet: Trotto (Songs & Dances)

"Songs And Dances" presents pieces from diverse points of the compass that are deeply rooted in ancient rhythms and scales - ranging from Italian renaissance music to Celtic traditions, from Afghanistan to Greenland to South Africa (in a hidden track). The magical power of these tunes is able to unite instruments which are most contrary in a historical sense: the saxophone, just one and a half centuries old, and the drum, probably the earliest of all instruments. A highlight of the program is the ensemble's adaptation of three string quartet movements written by composer, performer and music collector Michael Nyman who is probably best known for his soundtracks for Peter Greenaway's films. Making strict use of rhythmic structures and traditional forms of South Indian dances, Nyman's post-minimalistic miniatures are actually intercultural music.
