I cant even remember the last time i flew in the 2nd gen 737. I miss the flap sounds in the 3rd generation.

They create more wing surface area and increase the wings angle of attack without affect the pitch of the aircraft therefore creating more lift to sustain slower airspeeds required for landing and take off. They also create drag and slow the aircraft down. They are extended by hydraulic jack screws and slid along a track in the wing, they retract the same way.
