The Road - Beginnings

This will become a series of videos focusing on a period of time in the early 80's, and my adventures on the road as a young adult crossing the USA; walking, thumbing, sometimes riding the bus. The date of my departure was May 22, 1981.

I had one thin dime in my pocket, which at that time could buy a phone call. But I wasn't planning on calling anyone, so I left it on the coffee table. Pennyless, a small suitcase with a change of clothes and a couple of books were all I had to start my adventure. But then it's never really about material things. They are the trappings, the costumes, the props; but little more.

My adventure begins in Danville after dropping out of art school, and living back at home with my parents for awhile, I ended-up in a halfway house for a few weeks. But with time running out, about to be kicked-out; I decided to just walk away. In the middle of the night, suitcase in hand, I started walking toward Greensboro, NC.

I had no idea what I was going to do, to get a job, to get off of the street, to start living. One of the rides I got, the man suggested that I check-out the Salvation Army, that they would give people a place to stay off of the street, while they looked for work. So I checked them out, and that is where my adventure started, staring at this huge wall map of the continental USA, marked with all of the Interstate highways which cross this great country, all the while listening to stories of the people coming-in to catch a night off the road, talking about all of the places they'd just hitch-hiked in from, and were planning on hitch-hiking out to... and Interstate 40 went straight through the Grand Canyon and on beyond to LA, California!!! That's all it took! That was what began my journey!
