Take a step back to 1960 and this is the kind of music you would have heard in the store, or even a factory. Im sure many of these same tunes were played over AM radio too, as these types of tunes were common back then. They are "adult standards" type of instrumentals and have all but been forgotten about today which is sad. I can see workers building zenith TV sets while this song was playing in the background. This particular record is of the "industrial" series, meaning it was intended for play in assembly plants and so forth. This is how we used to be, when everything was engineered and made in USA.

  • What song is that?

  • I would like to find out myself. Unfortunately, there is no list of song titles for these records, which is the way they were from the start. The fidelity of these records are really good. If you play them on a regular phono, it sounds as good as a LP.

  • I absolutely love the music. Although I was not born until 1973, this music simulates what it would be like in the days gone by.

  • I love the music too. Im sure many of these tunes were played on AM. These types of tunes have all but been forgotten now. Its a shame that the records do not have any documentation as to the title of the tunes. I agree, with your comment completely. This music is what was common place back then, but since its not "exciting and innovative" like rock and roll, it all got left behind which is really sad....

  • Wonderful machine. I hear a quick "thump-thump-thump" in the background--does the idler puck have a flat spot on its surface?

  • Yes, you are correct. Ive yet to correct it though. The thump is amplified through the pick-up, however my camera mic makes it sound much more noticeable than it really is. Thanks for the compliments.

  • thats quite splendid

  • @singlejeff69 Hello, I see your are interested in finding one of these units. I just went to an auction yesterday and bought this exact unit and also picked up 3 of the Seeburg 1000 Background Music Compact unit , it is a smaller non amped version that you can find out abou online. I was also lucky enough to get about 300 of the records in very very nice shape all in the original shipping carton. Let me know if interested. I will be listing it all on ebay.

  • Man,,I can still picture myself and my mother in Stewarts in Downtown Louisville on the 3rd floor with that music playing in the background !!! I would give anything to find one of those units and records !!!!

  • il add that todays equipment in no way has the great Tone sound and charm of the old stuff this looks like it has maby a solid state amp but tubes and early transister amps sound cant be beat maby todays can Thump Thump and rattle windows but thats not what music is all about I collect old tube and transister radios , stereos and tape decks used to have some old juke boxes too I love setting in a semi or dark room and seeing the old radios dials and tubes glow:)

  • that is some really cool and creative mechanical engineering back then:) I love old stuff like this I was born just after this thing was out and in use but I love nostalgia kids today and people just dont know what they missed too bad department stores dont play stuff like this anymore makes it cool while your shopping thanks for a great look back in time at better days gone by

  • People are thinking this might've been played on the radio back then - and while there were stations that programmed stuff like this, they only played commercially-available LPs that people could buy in stores . The records in this video were specially-recorded for the Seeburg company and wouldn't have been available to the public. Most of these generic songs were probably unique to this company's library.

  • Sounds like Reg Owen & his Orchestra but I am really not certain.

If anyone knows whose orchestra this is, I would be very interested to know.

Some of the so called music played in shops these days is atrocious. Shopping must have been much more pleasurable back then. There is no reason whatsoever why this sort of music shouldn't still be played in stores- I am sure it would put people in a better frame of mind.

Lovely Seeburg music system too- top quality, built to last.

  • @SW1Q1 Ya, probably. But I wonder what kind of work will be the new "thing".

  • @Maxxarcade

    Dear Max.,

You wont have to worry about stepping into your own dream where you will be making all the things your late father did at his job, because you will be dead, too!

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Simply.... fantastic!
