A good crowd turned out despite the rain Tues day night for the Engle wood Pio neer Days Parade pub lic meet ing. It was the first pub lic meet ing held in the new Engle wood Cen ter For Sus tain abil ity build ings on Old Engle wood Road at Buchan Airport.

Erick Phelps dis cussed the com mu nity involve ment and sup port needed for the parade, and the desire to make the parade sus tain able. The sched ule for Pio neer Days was dis cussed, and the parade com mit tee met rep re sen ta tives from the Lemon Bay High School's "Engle wood Idol." This will be the sec ond year for the com mu nity singing competition.

Bart Tracy of Lasbury-Tracy Realty dis cusses the Com­mem o ra tive Mug pro gram -- a new idea being piloted this year.
Cathy Red man reviewed plans for the Michael O'Donnell Memo r ial Fish-A-Thon -- a revival of the Fish-A-Thons held in the past. This event is for chil dren 12 and under, with no entry fee, and will be held at 8:15 a.m. Sun day, Sept. 5, at the Tom Adams Bridge. Pre-registration is sug gested, with forms avail able at http://www.englewoodpioneerdays.com.

Bart Tracy explained the Com mem o ra tive Cup. A new item this year, it will be sold by par tic i pat ing Dear born Street mer chants prior to the parade and at the park infor ma tion cen­ters on the day of the parade. Pur chase of the cup enti tles the bearer to have it filled and refilled with dis counted drink items from the par tic i pat ing mer chants. The par tic i pat ing mer chants are: Compadre's,Village Gifts & Gallery, Mango Bistro, Café De La Bay and Englewood's on Dearborn.

Jean Airey talked about the his tory of Engle­wood Pio neer Days and the resched ul ing this year of an orig i nal parade entry -- the kids' dec o rated bike ride. Infor ma tion on the bike ride will be avail able on the website.

The var i ous types of vol un teers needed were dis cussed. Those attend ing were given sign-up cards to vol un teer to help, and just about every one did. More vol un teers are still needed, how ever. Any one inter ested in vol un­teer ing can do so on the website's home page. This sec tion shows the types of jobs -- i.e. title and job descrip tion -- and allows indi­vid ual sign-ups for spe cific jobs and times. Engle wood Pub lix will also be post ing information.

There is still space avail able for parade entries and park ven dors, but all appli ca tions must be in by Aug. 27. Airey cau tions that sim ply telling a com mit tee mem ber that you're going to be par tic i pat ing doesn't reserve you a place.
