  • Hi Dan. I am not sure if I will need heart surgery yet but I want to prepare myself for it just in case. I have been passing out and am extremely dizzy when I lay down or get up from a lying position. I'm going to have an ultrasound on my heart and am meeting with a cardiologist. I have a rapid heart beat and they need to determine what's causing it. Your blog has made me feel much more comfortable with it if that is the outcome for me. I hope you are doing well and thank you for sharing.

  • I hope you don't need it either, and it's easier said than done but don't worry too much about it, the worry and the wait is worse than the op, the pain, and the recovery :)

  • I wanna ask you.. do you use some pills or medicines daily ?

They told me that I'll be having pills everyday for all my life ... is that true ?

  • Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been checking this much lately. I am not on anything as I had a repair, but if you get the valve replaced by a mechanical valve you will be on warfrin daily, but it is managable and wouldnt even stop you climbing everest, surfing, rally car driving or anything... but check with your doctor for your exact options depending on which valve you may or may not need :)

  • I'm having an Open Heart Surgery soon... thank you very very very much for sharing your experience.

  • Hope it goes well for you and you have a non eventful recovery! x

    but thank u dan

  • Dan, Thanks for the information and care advice. I just had my surgery. They closed a 6cm hole (ASD) at the top so it was open heart. The cool part is the doctor only cut 1/2 of my chest. I was out of the hospital in 3 days. Its been 7 days now and I feel like a new person. The pain was not bad at all. Looking at all the stuff on open heart surgery helped me 100%, The family was more scraed and nervous than me. Anyways thanks again for your video's.

  • I had 2 open heart surgeries my last one was 2001 and I recovered fine. i do have poor circulation and water on the knees but other than that . Glad to find someone that has went through same thing !

  • so cutie, what has been happening? I looked for most posts but haven't found any to see how your scar healed. Your scar is a lot better looking than my moms, hers puffed up. did you ever get you beach holiday?

  • I am planning to climb Mt Whitney (14,500ft) next year and Mt Everest in about 3 years time. So taking warfarin each day has very little effect on my lifestyle.

  • I had a double mechanical heart valve replacement on June 18, 2009. My recovery is going well .... trying to power walk 2 x 1 hour each day (i.e. 2 x 7km) (7km = 4.5mi) . I am on warfarin daily and have been so for 16 years. I have had no problems with the warfarin and consequent thin blood over this period except in preparation for my most recent surgery. But it was all managed by specialists and all worked out.

  • do you find that some times you forget easy things?I have never been like that before but its been 5 weeks today that i had my aorta replaced.I also find my self listening to my heart beat at night and find it heart to get to sleep.did you have this?thanks form stu

  • Thanks so much for responding. How are you doing now? I sure hope you are feeling better and you no longer have to cold feet. :) I just want you to know that if I do have to have surgery that you have helped me out a great deal. It's the fear of the unknown. After seeing your story, I have a better understanding of it all and I just want to thank you for that.
