Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)
Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14

I. Rêveries - Passions

Seiji Ozawa, conductor
Toronto Symphony

Written in 1830.

Recorded in 1967.

ClassicalRecords is a Youtube channel where I upload some excellent performances from the LPs in my collection. I'm uploading these LPs because they are either not available on CD, out of print on CD, or just difficult to find.

  • The tune at 4:37 is the idée fixe. The tune represents the beloved (Harriot Smithson), whom the song was based on. Each movement is a different theme, and by the end, he "takes opium" and hallucinates of killing the beloved. Each movement, the theme returns but in a progressively transforming state.

  • We're going to have a marching band show based off of this symphony... its going to be epic.

  • i like the idee fixe in the 4th movement with the lone clarinet playing it

  • Program notes have nothing to to do with the music - then or now.

  • This is incredibly beautiful.

  • @BlahBlahYouWho wait, are u guys talking about ozawa or berlioz?

  • @gregplaysviola

I think it's the hair that does it.

  • @luchalmon

Idee Fixe? Oh! I believe he works at Seven-Eleven.

  • @luchalmon its the solo line that represents his love.

  • based on a fixed idea, which basically means an idea which reoccurs but is treated differently each time it is played
