In GOD WE TRUST was added to our coins in 1864--none of this stuff was intended by the founders because they KNEW what it would cause. They had just been through it recently tho.
Red Skelton was a good man, from a simpler time. He praised the 'UNITED' States of America, and all it represented. It's a shame that too many of the right wing praise that term 'UNITED', but don't really believe in it. If they did, then 'justice for all' would include the LGBT community, and it wouldn't be legal to fire homosexuals from their jobs in 29 states, or to prevent gays from serving in the military. Fomenting bigotry is not unifying.
The Nation that adopted the words "under God" has slipped away. What major celebrity in these times would do what Mr. Skelton did and have it well-recieved by his counrtymen and the Congress? Yup, I can't think of one either.
@allnightpancakes wouldn't that be why it says in the constitution that "Congress shall make no law regarding religion"?
that is the extent of the "wall of separation" in our founding document. we were supposed to be a nation of religious freedom. not only to those we fear (Islam) but to all religions who practice legally in our country.
I am not sure I understand you, but I appreciate that you are 'discussing' and not trying to beat me over the head (happens a lot on youtube). --"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." However, I do not interpret religious freedom as: religious people in their posts as government officials feeling free to make laws that respect only the wishes of religious people. I feel that too many elections are about emotional issues, not the running of the country.
