@Nostro200 No rules...as in combat techniques and such? They had just as many as Japan did. In fact, many of the European swordsmanship tactics were very similar to Japanese ones. It makes sense, since there are only so many ways to effectively kill an enemy with a sword.

You definitely don't have an idea about the gap between feudal japanese swordsmithing and modern swordsmithing, or specially between japanese swordsmithing and massive production american / chinese "sword"smithing.
How many real _samurai_ katana have YOU seen broken?
Of course what differentiates the katana is the natural sense of its design and the technique that was developed for its use, but any high samurai sword was freaking hard, and flawlessly built.

Are those real blades or show? Real blades arent suppose to reflect light
I think what differentiates the Katana from the other swords is in its swordsmithing and not necessarily because its the sharpest sword in the world. Its made to withstand the hardest of blows and be uncompromised by any other weapon striking it.

@flymistaslick Actually, the katana isn't really all that special as far as construction or shock absorption goes. You wouldn't believe how many broken katana I've seen...
The real reason the katana is so often held on a higher pedestal is...are you ready?
...Marketing. The katana, samurai, ninja, Japanese culture... It's all over the web, Hollywood eats it up, books are loaded with it... It's no better than the next sword. It's just been represented differently.

@Hyoujinsama Really? Have you broken tamahagane Katanas or the American made katanas? lol bc I bought a katana made by an American company and ive already rolled the edge a bit (obviously the price range of the weapon matters and mine wasnt all that expensive... I think genuine tamahaganes' go for a few grand to tens of thousands.

@flymistaslick There are very few American made katana available. At least, when compared to Chinese made. I've seen broken American blades, broken Chinese blades (a TON of them), and quite a few broken Japanese blades (most antiques). Tamahagane katana (modern made) range from $1500 for some Chinese blades up to several tens of thousands for Japanese made blades. Antiques can be had for as little as a few hundred bucks if you know where to look.
