Evolution isn't an up grading system. It's not about getting more advance in general, but rather towards a specific niche. We are only what we are due to a strange set of events... 1 out of how many billions of organisms? In fact, our genes kill us off, so we don't complete with our children. If life "wanted" to be immortal, i could've long ago. :)

i think its inevitable that we will achieve longevity, all this speculation about how it effects the "meaning of life" and such is totally irrelevant. we make the meaning. i would argue that the sole purpose of life and evolution is to achieve immortality. could it be that evolution is a striving of all species in a race towards immortality?
