  • Coltrane and Getz together with Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. This most amazing, but the problem with these postings is no information is given along with the videos. When, Where, and Why are left out; thankfully, we always know the Who.

  • Kelly takes a breath at the beginning of each phrase like he's playing a horn.

  • Anyone else noticed how awesome the piano stool looks like?

  • Richard Carpenter never wrote a song in his life. To quote James Gavin's book on Chet Baker: "Carpenter approached downtrodden black artists as a "brother" who would protect their business affairs from the thievery of the "whiteys" His client list included Lester Young, Gene Ammoms, Sonny Stitt, Howard McGee, Elmo Hope, Duke Jordan, Chet Baker & Tadd Dameron. "He robbed everybody who came near him" said Mia Dameron.

"Walkin" was believed tobe written by Jimmy Mundy and originally called "Gravey"

  • @ALTERED13TH So he does, and I hear traces of Bud Powell in his playing.

  • @teebeeferris I agree! Wynton was my uncle and godfather and seeing him on video do his thing is unexplainable!

  • I love getting to see Trane actually play this stuff. When all you have are the records and discs, it somehow removes you from the reality that a real, live human being actually did it!

  • Wonderful quartet w nobody less than unbelievable great Trane leading! As for Chambers he was a real phenomenon...

  • Wynton Kelly was one of the best pianists to sustain right hand phrases in up tempo.

  • I totally agree with you. At the time though, talking to Jimmy Cobb, HE said to me that people didn't take Wynton as seriously as they should, because of that finger. I posted that comment up there because I was interested if anybody else had heard about this...

Wynton is absolutely one of my favorite piano players. I don't care if he plays upside down, backwards or with no fingers, he's always swinging. And it's such a special swing, like he's laughing or playing a joke on you: it sparkles!

  • Stupid in my view, who cares about how they play. Look at Monk with his flat finger technique. Wynton Kelly was a stellar accompanist and soloist, period!
