  • The word "Castas" merely means category or classification in Castilian Spanish, eg: racial category, religious category, architectural category, etc. (continued below)

  • (continue from above) These paintings may have been created to mock the creation of the "castas" class itself, to depict wishful thinking by the members of the class, or they may not have been created in the 17th century at all, but rather in the 20th century for the purpose of ridiculing the Spanish.

  • (continue from above) In the 18th Century there existed only 3 official social classifications. The Spanish (whites)) "upper class, the " Castas," and the Indians. For 300 years Mexican law ONLY allowed the upper class to own property and have wealth and absolutely precluded any "Castas" or Indian from owning property or accumulating wealth.

  • (continue from above) Castas were the maids, workers, and anything else that was low class. No casta was allowed to rise to the upper classe, better known as the "Spanish class" . As for Mexican pure blooded Indians, they isolated themselves and were ruled only a few elders.

  • (continue from above) The Spanish never invented these subcategories existing in these paintings The Castas (mixed-race people) themselves invented them, and the biological and anthropological inaccuracy of the paintings clearly reveal the ignorance of that class.

  • (continue from above) If one looks at the Royal academy of Spain's dictionary one discovers that some of the names depicted in the paintings were logically derived from words that relate to a color. Alvina for example, means Alvine.
