Mr Chirac, 76, who has kept a low profile since he retired last year after a 12-year stint as French leader, was "violently bitten" by his white Maltese dog, named after the Japanese wresting discipline.

The pet was a gift to the former French first couple from their grandson, Martin.

While the once prodigiously energetic Mr Chirac is said to have slowed down since his retirement, his beloved dog has been having "frenetic" fits of late, in which it jumps into the air and turns aggressive.

Mrs Chirac, 75, whose husband is said to have found it hard getting used to life after politics, told the magazine VSD that the dog was being treated with antidepressants.

It is unclear where Mr Chirac was bitten but the injuries are not believed to be bad.

Mr Chirac left office with one of the lowest approval ratings of any French president, and was vilified for his failures in a series of books by former colleagues and acquaintances.

But in an apparent wave of nostalgia for the ailing former leader, Mr Chirac is now France's second most popular political personality, with an approval rating of 70 per cent just one percentage point below Bernard Kouchner, the foreign minister.

The president, Nicolas Sarkozy, meanwhile trails him by 24 points, on 46 per cent.

Referring to the mauling her husband received from political foes after stepping down, the formidable Mrs Chirac said: "He bears no grudges. But I never forget."
