They do it because they get money. There are a lot of less known rappers out there that rap with some actual meaning. But in general its pretty bad; just look at Lil Wayne's lyrics.

Rap by definition and rhyme is crap - rap crap there is only one rap song all they do is change the words the melody or should I say the lack of melody is the same. If they want to write poetry then write it - rather than record streams of barely understandable fast verbal diarrhea to a drum machine with perhaps a bass line.
