John Paton - Tenor Saxophone
Michael Burrows - Drums

This project focuses on the collective improvisation of Saxophone and Drums. It is inspired by a lot of different music, but specifically John Coltrane's late album Interstellar Space and seeing Rashied Ali play duo live with Sonny Fortune. Other musicians with direct influence include Joe Lovano, Evan Parker, Jim Black, Tim Berne, Joey Baron, Paul Motian, Lee Konitz, and Charles Lloyd.

John Paton is a young musician based in the Vancouver area. With equal experience playing Guitar, Electric Bass and Tenor Saxophone, he has studied/performed with local Vancouver musicians Jared Burrows, Brad Muirhead, Ron Samworth, Mike Allen, Bill Clark, Coat Cooke, Stan Taylor, Rob Kohler, David Branter, Len Aruliah, Chad Makela and Stan Karp, and legends Lee Konitz, Eddie Gomez, Steve Turre, Dee Daniels, David Braid and more.

Michael Burrows was born and raised in Vancouver, BC and has recently moved to Lethbridge with his wife Nicole. His extraordinary musical abilities on saxophone, drums, and guitar were discovered at an early age playing with his brother (jazz guitarist Dr. Jared Burrows) and his father. Michael has performed at the Vancouver Fringe Festival, South Delta Jazz Festival, Vancouver Freedom Festival, with the Silent Summer Nights Film Orchestra, and at variety of clubs and other venues in the Vancouver region with groups such as the Michelle Miller Quartet and Tristan Rogers Trio. In 2003, he collaborated extensively with the Xiang Performance Group from Taiwan, composing and performing music for the acclaimed theatre production, "May, Maybe" which enjoyed an extensive run at the Studio 16 theatre and performances and educational outreach activities at Simon Fraser University.

As a teacher, Michael is well known for his kind, patient, and easy-going demeanour and his passion for a wide variety of styles and genres of music. He maintains a very large studio of drum and saxophone students at Scott's Music in Lethbridge, Alberta. Michael has been a teaching assistant for the Delta Community Music School Jazz Ensembles I and II and was also a teaching assistant at the Delta Jazz Workshop summer program for 2006 and 2007. His jazz trio was featured in two performances at the 2007 South Delta Jazz Festival. He has been fortunate to study saxophone with British musician, Leonard Aruliah, and drums with Stan Taylor. He has taken masterclasses with some of Canada and the USA's finest jazz musicians including: Brad Muirhead (trombone), Tommy Babin (bass), Dr.Kevin Hoferer (saxophone), Karen Graves (saxophone), Dr. Clyde Reed (bass), and Robert Kohler (bass), the Education Director at Stanford Jazz Workshop. Michael's musical influences include jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, Elvin Jones, Stan Taylor and Bruce Freedman, and pop/alternative artists such as Mr. Bungle, Vinnie Colaiuta, Norah Jones, and Sting.
