The use of ethanol as a fuel has developed since the late l970's. It was first used as a product extender because of gasoline shortages in the 1970s from OPEC increasing prices and blocking shipments of crude oil to the United States. The term gasohol was defined, for the first time, in the Energy Tax Act of 1978. Gasohol was defined as a blend of gasoline with at least 10 percent alcohol by volume, excluding alcohol made from petroleum, natural gas, or coal. For this reason, all ethanol to be blended into gasoline is produced from renewable biomass feedstocks. Ethanol is also used to increase the octane rating as toxic lead was eliminated from gasoline starting in the mid 1970s. Ethanol also reduces carbon monoxide emissions from gasoline. The use of ethanol in gasoline can also reduce emissions which contribute to the formation of smog. The first large scale use of ethanol as a fuel happened during the early 1900's. Henry Ford's Model T and other early 1920's automobiles were originally designed to run on alcohol fuels. The U.S. relied on ethanol to power their armies during World War II. After World War II, oil prices decreased which caused the use of ethanol to decrease. The limited use of ethanol continued until the oil crisis developed in the 1970's. Today, ethanol is widely used and available in most areas of the U.S. Ethanol is contained in over 11% of all gasoline sold in the United States. It is, or has been, marketed by such companies as Exxon, Sunoco, Texaco, Amoco, Mobile, ARCO, Super-America, Chevron, Union, Shell, and Phillips, as well as numerous independent marketers.   • Basically your getting ripped off at the pump for people who do not understand your buying BTU's when you fuel your rig or car.

  • I remember being told decades ago that ethanol was added to gasoline to keep the cost down. More recently I was told that one of the reasons for higher gas prices was the expense of adding ethanol to make it cleaner burning.

  • Notice @ 0:09 how the gallons line can exceed 100 gallons but the total sale line won't exceed $99.99!
