If you're interested in putting in a fleece liner for your cage, there's a great forum called "Lucky's Place" that has amazing How-To sections that can teach you how to make fleece liners, hammocks, tubes, and other great chin-safe toys. The members on this particular forum are great and will answer any other questions you may have about chins :)

A lot of people have commented on how the mesh is bad for the chins. They are actually right. I know that you may not want to hear that you need to change something (especially if you are stubborn like me ;) ), but you should consider either investing in a new cage, or try to cover up the mesh. If you can't afford a new cage, try putting down a polar, anti-pill fleece liner over the mesh and get a litter pan (preferably glass or stainless steel - I use a small, shallow Pyrex glass pan).

"Exotics vet" aka your local vet who classes a chinchilla in the same category as a Guinea Pig. Why do you think you have to remove the sand bath and not keep it in the cage all of the time? So they do not urinate in it. Urinated sawdust/shavings, whatever; IS bad for them, their genitals and their fur. Good day.
-
Do your own research and talk to an exotics vet before you answer. Metal is bad for them, It was only invented to make it easier for owners to clean the cages and for the cages to not wear down with time. (And they us one corner of their cage to pee in, so they don't walk around in their own urine, plus they stay on the top most ledges mainly and not on the lowest level where the bedding is.

The cages without meshes are just as good, you will always have wooden ledges and chinchillas prefer to stay higher off the ground so they will spend most of their time on the top shelves. They do not walk around in their own pee as they pee in one corner. Very clean animals. And if you clean once a week like you are meant to doesn't really matter what cage you have.
-
If they sit around and walk on the metal too much can cause issues with their feet (like over drying and peeling skin) as well as accidental breaking of limbs. They need to have some sort of wooden platforms/ledges so they can spend time on those rather than being on metal the whole time.

k80ktkd, lolparadox; instead of trolling do your research. Mesh is better for chinchillas because they're not sitting nor walking in their own urine, which IS bad for them.
You're wrong.....
The cages you're not supposed to get are the ones with large gaps, because the Chinchillas legs will fall through and possibly break.
Now this cage, that i also have has small squares so the pooop will fall to the bottom pan for easy clean! *yesss*
And it's not big enough for the chinchillas feet to fall through!!
