@cobrachoppergirl That statement completely ignores the last 50 years of engine advancements. Never have engines been more reliable. Almost never see a broken down car on the side of the road that wasn't owner induced. Back in the day that was a normal sight.

An engine should be designed first and foremost to never, ever, ever fail. These car engines are designed as complex devices, and the more complex a device is, the more prone it is to failing. Valves wear out, cylinders and rings wear out, any one system breaks because of a single point of failure... like oil pan bolt falling out, or leak in cooling system, and whole engine is destroyed.
