Forza 3 - Intro

HD CAPTURE TEST NOTES:

TEST 1 = raw 1280x720, 60fps, unknown bitrate, 800MB, .AVI, capture file untouched, uploaded to YouTube.
(This video.)

TEST 2 = raw 1280x720, 60fps, unknown bitrate, 800MB, .AVI, capture file converted to 1280x720, 30fps, 7027kbps bitrate, 50MB, .WMV using Windows Movie Maker, uploaded to YouTube.

TEST RESULTS:

TEST 1 = FAIL: YouTube cannot handle the raw capture file and creates a horizontal scanline distortion effect. Ugly.

TEST 2 = WIN: YouTube handles the Windows Movie Maker file perfectly. It's beautiful.

Recorded using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro capture card and a four 7,200 RPM HD RAID-0 array Dell Precision T3400 workstation. We use this system to record professional game footage of our own games. Let me know what you think of the quality.

I am an indie game developer, part of a two-man team called XONA GAMES. We make Xbox LIVE games. Our current project is a 2D arcade shoot'em up, DUALITY ZF. It features 4x multiplayer and dual play, the ability to control two ships at the same time. Check it out:

  • Check out the video response (test 2/2) for improved quality...

  • Wow! That's top-notch quality! I'm watching this on my old comp (only SD) and it's sharp as a tack! I can't remember the last time I saw such a high quality video, actually.

Since our last discussion, I actually know quite a bit about the whole video capture thing and know that (sadly), I won't be able to get this capture card. If only I knew about all this stuff earlier, I'd have gotten a desktop instead of a laptop and it would've been a different story. :( I've more or less (continued).

  • given up on ever being able to do this. :( I've only really got one other option left that I've heard might work: get the Hauppauge one and some HDMI splitters and some converter or another (I think it was VGA, I forget now) and (eventually) convert the signal back to component so that I can play in HDMI and capture in component (the quality just playing in component leaves a lot to be desired).

Anyway, good video. Now it's time for some Geo Wars 2 videos. ;)

  • too bad you can't get into this... those of your type of skill need to record it!!! it's a disservice not to!! what you need, though, is a four hard drive raid-0 array with the capture card, to avoid skipped frames!

  • i just replied to you and "worstplayer" below (above?) if you care to read it. i think the quality can still be improved!!!

  • check my latest video back to back to this one... way better quality when i convert it DOWN to a 50MB .wmv file (from the original 800MB .avi file)! youtube handles the lower bitrate better somehow!

  • Yeah, it's gutting that I can't get this one but what can you do?

The Hauppauge one (or others) would work just fine, though admittedly, not at this level of quality.

  • Lol! I never noticed anything. It looks fine to me but I guess if you can still improve it, why not? :P

  • hmmm... it still seems to have scanline or horizontal aritfacts, noticeable in the text and high contrast parts (edges of the car, etc.) i'll have to process the raw .avi files with windows movie maker and re-upload them to see if i can get better quality. i would have thought youtube would do a better job with the raw files, but apparently not. our "april 2009 duality zf" video is recorded in the same resolution and has none of these artifacts! thanks for the feedback!

  • The 3rd comment was removed because the 2nd comment didn't initally show, just to clarify.
