Wessel Ilcken (Hilversum December 1, 1923 - July 13, 1957) was a Dutch jazz musician and percussionist. He was a central figure in the Dutch jazz scene during the Bebop period.
After working with studio bands he started in 1950 his own band with his wife, the vocalist Rita Reys: Rita Reys Sextet. In 1953 he lived with his wife in Sweden, the former center of European jazz. There he met Quincy Jones, who greatly admired Ilcken's drumming. After his return he was the undisputed leader of the Dutch modern Jazz scene until a brain hemorrhage cut his life short. He was also the motor of Dutch Jazz phonograph recordings named "Jazz Behind The Dykes". The annual prize of the Dutch jazz was named after him until 1980 (since 1980: Boy Edgar Award).
Nog steeds prachtig. Bedankt.
