@intrepgun: Well, it was more because his commanding officer went nuts during the climatic battle, and he tried to stop him, only to survive and be arrested for desertion under fire or cowardice. But yeah, that could be a factor, too.

Actually, this show was inspired by the movie, "Springfield Rifle" , starring Gary Cooper, about an Army officer in the Civil War who was supposedly court - martialed for cowardice , but was in fact an agent for the Army.
