On September 12, 2008, Houston/Galveston and the Texas Gulf Coast were hit with catastrophic force by a Category 2 storm, Hurricane Ike. We created this slide show with the hope that it would inspire viewers to donate to disaster relief efforts in the Texas Gulf Coast area.

  • I work with the Red Cross and was deployed for Hurricane Ike. I hope you don't mind, but I liked the video so much that I put a link to it on our Chapter website.

  • I am very flattered! Thank you.

  • ummmmmm.......was that a cougar at 4:29 ?

  • Going outside when my house was in the eye of the storm was probably the eeriest thing I've ever been through. Pasadena, TX.

  • went down there with the Texas national guard in front of the civic center was a bad time

  • Galveston has always had a place in my heart. A week after Ike, My buddy and I quit our jobs to do relief work. We went down there (from Waco) with nothing but sleeping bags and motorcycles and did all we could for a month without pay and leaving our families behind. Thank God the poop deck and the spot were still around. We rode before the sun rose from Destination Luna (in LaMarque) to the island every morning and back well after it set. We were the "mohawk brothers" camping off our bikes.

  • I lived in Houston at the time of this hurricane.... it made landfall 10 days before my 18th birthday... Man, i'm 20 years old now and it still feels like it was yesterday...

  • IMPORTANT!!! Watch, A HOME FIT FOR ROYALTY!!!

  • Two things about Ike. A combination of high tide and Gulf current made the tide start rising 24 hours before the storm hit. The Galveston Bay area was flooded the day before the storm and then saw a storm surge that normally would have been brought in by a much larger hurricane.

Much of the Houston area was without power for several weeks. An army of utility crews came from as far away as Michigan and California to restore electricity to the city's residents, working 7 days a week. Thanks...

  • That storm was something else. Anyone who didn't flee Galveston took their life in their hands. I lived in Spring and the storm whipped around and pounded us with full force. Knocked down trees, Ripped off roofs. Lucky for us, we didn't lose power for but a day, but other side of street didn't have for a month! It definitely was an experience to remember.
