He speaks a bit more English dialogue in another scene or two with her. He could be speaking phonetically, though, as it sounds a bit awkward. Don't know for sure, but I suspect he learned his English lines just for the movie.

Actually, she graduated from an international school in Japan. Hence, she studied english before this movie. She's quite better in english than most Japanese, I'd wager.
