This is the final battle from Frontier Aja's game, Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony!

[Video description updated on 2012-01-16, see below]

What is this game? Well, it's a Castlevania-style game that uses characters from a series of overhead-style shooter games known in Japan as the Touhou Project. You can definitely see the shooter-style action in this game, given the number of projectiles to dodge and your character's much smaller hitbox when she's flying.

You may notice something different in this video compared to others: the dialogue is in English! Frontier Aja's 1.03 game patch adds the ability to play the game in English or French, as well as the ability to start with 20 extra lives in reserve. (Both of which I'm thankful for, even if the translation is a little rough. I love it all the same!)

The game itself was released during Comiket 76 in August 2009. There exists a trial version of the game which was hosted on Frontier Aja's blog; however, that blog (and most of Frontier Aja's website) seems to be down. As soon as I have an updated link for the trial and the blog, I will link them here.

If you are looking to download the game's patches, as of 2012-01-16, Frontier Aja's main website currently hosts links to official patch locations. The 1.03 patch includes the English and French language translations -- no extra language packs necessary. The download links are located at:

Sadly, there is no "central" place to order your own copy of this game; however, I can say that I placed my own order with the Palet Mail Service, which does ship internationally. (Great news for those of us living outside Japan!) Once on their page, click the "Frontier Aja" link or search for "Koumajou":

The game demo seemed to run fine on my non-Japanese version of Windows XP. However, if you encounter problems loading it or displaying Japanese characters on a non-Japanese system, you may need to install and use Microsoft's AppLocale utility, and use that to open the game and its patch files. The utility is currently located at:

If you do try the game, expect to die. A lot. ... Enjoy. ;)
