It has preserved its immemorial name down through the centuries and carries it today with pride. Foreign attempts to change it to "Piscopi" did not find the required response in the islands people and so failed.

Its mass rises up between Rhodes and Kos, roughly in the middle between these two islands. Round about and closer by it is in the company of Nisiro (NW), Halki (SE) and Simi (NE). Το its north stretches the Asia Minor Knidos (Kavo-Krios). Further along to its west is Astipalia and to the south it is watched over by Karpathos and beyond this Kassos. Tílos (Greek: Τήλος; ancient form: Telos) is a small Greek island and municipality located in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, and lies midway between Kos and Rhodes. It has a population of 533 inhabitants (2001 census).[1] Along with the uninhabited offshore islets of Antitilos and Gaidaros, it forms the Municipality of Tilos, which has a total land area of 64.525 km².

Popularly, Telos was the son of Helios and Halia, the sister of the Telchines. He came to the island in search of herbs to heal his ill mother, and later returned to found a temple to Apollo and Neptune. However, Telos (Telo or Tilo) does not appear in Greek mythology and the name probably has an unknown pre-Hellenic origin. Pliny the Elder notes that in antiquity Telos was known as Agathussa (Αγαθούσσα) (also Agathusa and Agathousa). In the Middle Ages, it was known by the Italian Piscopi or Episcopi (also Pisconia). The island has also been called Turkish: İlyaki; Italian: Piscopi.

Ένα από τα Δωδεκάνησά μας, που δεν της λείπουν ούτε οι φυσικές χάρες ούτε οι ιστορικές περγαμηνές. Οι επισκέπτες της έχουν να δουν και να χαρούν αρκετά

πράγματα στο νησί: τη σχεδόν πρωτόγονη φύση του, τις καθαρές του θάλασσες, τα δροσερά νερά του, τ αποτυπώματα της ευλάβειας του (με πρώτο το μοναστήρι του Αγ. Παντελεήμονα), τα θυμητάρια της ιστορίας του, την ήρεμη ζωή του, τους ανθρώπους του με τις γραφικές εθιμικές εκδηλώσεις, με τους απλούς τους τρόπους και την καλή τους διάθεση. "Το Νησί με τις Αμυγδαλιές", ανήκει πια στο παρελθόν, στη θέση όμως αυτού του θεάματος ήρθε κάτι άλλο , καινούργιο, το ίδιο ξεχωριστό μα και σπουδαίο: οι νάνοι ελέφαντές της, που οι μελετητές τους μας δείχνουν σε συναρμολογημένους σκελετούς και πιστά ομοιώματα, όπως ήταν τα ζώα αυτά τον καιρό που ζούσαν στο νησί. Και το θέαμα τούτο, μοναδικό καθώς είναι στην Ελλάδα αλλά και από τα πιο αξιόλογα στον κόσμο, συναρτώμενο προς την εκεί μεγάλη παλαιοντολογική ανακάλυψη, που έφερε τα σημαντικότατα αυτά ευρήματα στο φως, θα δώσει δίκαια ένα νέο χαρακτηριστικό όνομα στην Τήλο, κάνοντάς την τώρα περισσότερο γνωστή ως "Το Νησί των Ελεφάντων".
