  • i am 18 and currently living in the UK. I have never been exposed to south Indian rhythm however my interest in it keeps on growing. I am studying drum kit at degree level however the complexity and raw nature of these rhythms affect me like no other. you are truly blessed. would love any advice on how to begin my journey into the world of south indian rhythm, thanks.

    Charlie.

  • Its our pleasure Charlie that you like this and are getting interested. The good news is that you live in the UK where there are many good teachers, only problem is that they teach orally and do not use western notation as you see above. Best way fwd for you would be get 2 DVD's to study from. One is our DVD ( of which you see the excerpt above), and the other is Vikku's son Selva and McLaughlin with their "Gateway to Rhythm"dvd. You can find both on abstractlogix(dot)com. thanks

  • Hi, Is it possible to get the DVD in Chennai ?

  • @arjunbala4u sorry for the delay. it is in limited stores in chennai, but best way is to order online at rhythmhouse(dot)in and they can ship to you. thanks

  • I WANT TO SEE THIS GUY RAP

  • @02049202 LOL--- Rappers wont be able to keep up with this guy's ( Umashankar) rap. Because his konokol ( vocal percussion) is a language that even precedes his physical drumming and is every bit as intricate and advanced as his maestro percussion!

  • @skate77zz thats his personal style, he is accenting the first notation of the cycles that repeat to show the pattern in them . Hope you like them. he is the world's finest ghatam player, and it was amazing to see him "nail" all this vocal material in just one take . truly humbling ...-))

  • ... I don't see any accents. Why is he accenting those certain notes?

  • LOL
