A canoeing video of Tim poling up and snubbing down the Big Machias River during the June, 2011 Riverman Course. The camera gets a little shakey in the middle, but even with this is shows that with a pole and some experience a person can travel upstream through a rip faster than they can walk on shore.

  • We shot this during a break on a day trip. Everyone was on shore and asked if I could demonstrate going up the rip as we'd spent the day snubbing. There were six people watching so I wasn't concerned about not wearing a pfd for this, but I was wearing one the rest of the day.

  • His shirt wasnt wet on the poling up... Nice job though.

  • @spence0324 Good eye, it wasn't wet on the way up. There was about a ten minute gap between poling up and snubbing down, during which I went in the river.

  • Poling The Big Machias... like a boss

  • Just curious, why no PFD? I tell all of my Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts that they don't have to wear one if they can prove to me they can float when they are unconscious. Get pitched out of the canoe, hit your head on rock and you are in trouble. I ABSOLUTELY love all of the videos, great job.
