World-renowned game designer Jane McGonigal explores whether or not pro-social video games -- games that instruct players to help others -- are actually beneficial to the mental development of children.

-----

This program was recorded at the 12th Annual Wonderfest, the San Francisco Bay Area Festival of Science.

Wonderfest's broad goals are best described by its mission statement: Through public discourse about provocative scientific questions, Wonderfest aspires to stimulate curiosity, promote careful reasoning, challenge unexamined beliefs, and encourage life-long learning.

Wonderfest achieves these ends by presenting series of scientific events to the general public. At most of these events, pairs of articulate and accomplished researchers discuss and debate compelling questions at the edge of scientific understanding. - Wonderfest 2010

Jane McGonigal is the Director of Games Research & Development at the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, California.

She has created and deployed games and missions in more than 30 countries on six continents. She specializes in games that help gamers enjoy their real lives more -- and games that challenge players to tackle real-world problems, through planetary-scale collaboration.

Perhaps we didn't watch the same video. She was arguing for the POSITIVE aspects of gaming. How in the world you could misunderstand this video so completely is absolutely baffling to me.

  • Lol I'm 14 and I've played triple the amount of gaming hours! NO LIFE!

  • WTF is this video about lol how many people play mario sunshine? This video is irrelevant. I want to see how playing first person shooters (and other violent games) influence people cause this kind of games are played massively. My opinion is that if nothing else they make violence and wars appear more normal and acceptable in society which is definitely not a good thing.

  • @gurra991 So then correlating with this research you will be 5 times more like to do illegal animal fights. (jk! :])

  • Video Games = Some what actully educational/infromational

  • @Drpwnage9000 o.0

  • hmm.. so writing tests and quizes aren't violent? funny. as we all know: words are deadlier than swords

  • @atamotua64

No part of your comment addresses my arguments:

    - in THE BULK of games the good guys win

    - there isnt anything wrong with witchcraft, wiccans .etc do exist

    - if your child thinks it is ok to apply violent video game scenarios to the real world they already need mental help (and the video game is just making the defect more apparent)

  • @types10000 i dont know where you get your info... just as an example, listen/watch some Ivor Myers videos like "Dangers of Video Games - Its Not A Game" and "Battles of Faith Game Of Death" and "Sonic Warfare"...

  • Read her book, it's excellent
