His daughter was born in 1998 and he wanted a reduced schedule to be there during her formative years. So in 07 his role was reduced so he didn't have to go to location shots (something that was also good for his knees which were suffering a lot of strain from old injuries he got on MacGuyver). The series ended though he returned for Continuum and has confirmed an appearance in SGA:Extinction.

He did not have problems with his daughter, he just wanted to spent more time with her as she was and still is growing up. Also, he did appear in the movie Stargate: Continuum as well as several episodes of Stargate SG-1 after he left the main cast, and a couple of Atlantis episodes.
