Canada Vignettes - Captain Cook

Two hundred years ago Captain Cook stopped briefly at Nootka Sound. This animated vignette depicts how he began the sea otter trade which led to the development of the Pacific north west.

  • There are sea otters everywhere up and down the BC coast.

  • Ummm, sea otters FACED extinction, they are NOT extinct. Surprised the NFB would make such a statement...look it up:

  • @DustyTowne Not stupid explorers without captain cook every boat ride you'd take would be mostly your death because he cured scurvy. Also Captain Cook discovered Hawaii so without him no tropical island vacation for you. Plus, on the general side, without explorers no America. Still think explorers are "Stupid?"

  • Oh when man's greediness destroys life, that is the greater sin

  • Stupid explorers!

  • It it, really... only with much greater subtlty. See the juxtoposition of the living sea otter with the parting words proffered regarding it having been hunted to extinction, alongside the description of the fur trade itself as "ruthless."
