Final moments of Melbourne radio station 3XY. It's transmitter was turned off at 1pm on September 23, 1991... ending 56 years of broadcasting.

It was the first time a capital city radio station had been removed from the airwaves.

It's new owners AWA Media Pty Ltd made the decision to close 3XY down so it could relocate studios from Geelong back to Melbourne and relaunch the station under a new name and call sign 3EE The Breeze 693. (now Magic 1278).

After the final song played from the studio at Midday, a pre-recorded tape prepared by the Department of Communication went to air hosted by rock historian Glenn A. Baker.

  • Now I'm confused - Roxanne keeps mentioning the "final minutes" and "I'll Be Gone" as the final song; so what's the Glenn A Baker thing?

The Eyewitness News story on the XY closure also has the station ending at midday, with Spectrum... Was Rox's shift the final LIVE broadcast (until midday), and the Baker thing a pre-record (until 1pm)?

  • Nothing to be confused about - If you read the blurb it's all there - the last song played from the studio was "I'll be gone" - Specturm... after that a precorded tape which was prepared by the Department of Comminications was played highlighting the station's history and informing listeners it was about to be taken off the air. - The transmitter was turned off at 1PM.

  • and that would be Spectrum lol typo

  • I used to listen to 3XY during my teenage years and listening to the Saturday top 40. I think I still got some of the paper charts that could be picked from most record stores listing the singles and albums, so I roughly knew when the songs were coming on so I could record them to cassette. Also the XY-ZOO breakfast show was a great laugh. Thanks for this video.

  • Mmm...the five locations where 3XY was over the years?

    411 King Street, Melbourne

    250 Spencer Street Melbourne

    Rathdowne Street Carlton

    Where else?

Also will find the Glen A Baker special and post...

  • @4395947 Oh, great, then can you please try to upload "The Final Hour" on Youtube? I must hear the whole thing.

  • Yes I do still have the recording somewhere in my archives. It's been a few years but I'm fairly sure I recorded the final 3 hours non-stop, which included the final 60 minute pre-recorded tape.

  • Has anyone got the pre-recorded "3XY- The Final Hour" in its entirety somewhere?

  • @uraniumdeath - Yeah, it does sound like it took its last gasp and flatlined.

  • haha the memories, home of the original 'Rocktober'!! and 'its a good morning to you on the XY Zoo!!!!!'

  • I grew up in the 80s listening to 3XY. I'd always listen to the Top 40 on saturday nights taping the 12" mixes of songs onto cassettes.

  • does anybody know the 5x locations where 3xy was over the years?

I know it wound up out the back of 3BAYFM in Geelong, but what about before then? Anybody know??

Where's Laurie Atlas when you need him?

  • I've got my 3XY 'ROLL OVER ROCKTOBER' 7" vinyl single somewhere - with a round denim look cover!
