4014 on display at the LA county fairgrounds in Pomona, CA.

According to several of the men responsible for the preservation of this engine & the others, they were planning on doing some cosmetic work on 14; new paint, & new boiler jacketing to get it ready for September when the LA fair would take place. They told me that restoring it to operating condition would be next to impossible due to the outrageously high costs (restoration, maintainence, fuel, insurance, getting a crew to operate it, etc.) and even when it was running during the 1940's and '50s that it was extremely hard on the tracks and cost UP some extra track maintenance. It's tremendous length was also a setback since it was a pain for UP to deal with getting it to fit on turntables, and navigating safely around curves and wyes. And lastly, it would have to be changed to burn oil, which would be quite difficult since historically only one BB (4005) was briefly converted to oil but it was uneconomical and too difficult to fire properly.

It had some small rust marks on the exterior, but other then that it seemed to be in pretty good shape, not falling apart or anything seriously wrong. It's bell and whistle are operable from a powerful air compressor which can be turned on with a valve near the engineer's seat. The cab is always locked due to the theft of gauges and equipment from inside.

  • all it would take is a wall street guy with an interest in it and a few of his dollars to get this beautiful machine restored and running

  • Oh my god thats' one big loco

  • How much would ins. cost for a year in operation?

  • @trainmanauxl1 I agree... The only thing you have to figure out is how to keep the fire going. In this day and age is it that hard to figure out how to boil water to make steam?

  • really cool whistle

  • Its BEAUTIFUL.

  • Tremenda máquina!, gracias por el video.

  • How can a bigboy be any worse than the challenger on the tracks it's bullshit that one isn't running.
